Hungry city

About cities and food

Commissioned by the MAS, Museum aan de Stroom, Antwerp 2016

Direction and production cinematic quadriptych Hungry City in collaboration with Marie- Françoise Plissart, photographer and cinéaste

For the exhibition 'Antwerp à la carte' (2016-2026) in the MAS, Museum aan de Stroom, we are making a contemporary cinematic quadriptych about food in the city. The four-part covers the four themes of the exhibition: transport, market, food and waste.

The assignment is to create images as views on the city, as if the closed walls of the exhibition space - designed as a Black box- are broken open. The cinematic images conform to and contrast with the historical paintings on the wall. The question of the scenographers is to make a standing film image . We opt for a total image that registers the movement on the location within an unchanged frame, so that it really becomes a moving painting.

The challenge is to find locations and moments in Antwerp, beyond the clichés and unambiguously corresponding to the themes. It will be a search along the port of Antwerp, markets, terraces or public places for a picnic and waste mountains.
